Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback), her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's early TV appearances. Her parents, however, did not let her perform until she turned an adult due to the impact stress might have on their daughter. Perry admitted that she wasn't at ease in the stage during high school. She began acting to make friends at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry was a graduate of Boston University, relocated into New York in search of acting roles on television. She landed small parts on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, homesickness drove her to California in search of theater jobs. She and her mother starred on Broadway together in The Other Place, in 2013. Her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prizewinning drama Anna Christie together with her in 2015. Perry was featured nine times on the ABC film The Family, in 2016. In 2017, she was a part-time character in ABC's thriller about politics Scandal which starred her father. That same year she portrayed a child model of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory), portraying her mother in a youthful version. The character was picked via auditions though she had a close relationship with the show.
